Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Gaertner has expertise in the pathogenesis of viral infections of rodents specializing in rats. She has performed hands-on work with rodent parvoviruses (KRV,and other isolates) in vivo and with rodent coronaviruses (Sialodacryoadenitis virus isolates) in vivo and in vitro including production of a cloned cell line which supports the growth of new isolates from infected rats. She also has expertise in biology and diseases of a wide variety of laboratory animals, including the containment of infectious disease outbreaks and pathologic lesions.

Description of Clinical Expertise

Clinical care expertise in the veterinary care, diseases, pathology, husbandry and experimental use of a wide variety of animal species, including mice, rats and primates. Additional, non-research areas of expertise include vivarial management, vivarial design and construction, renovation and construction grant applications and other related topics.

Description of Other Expertise

Dr. Gaertner has been an ad hoc site visitor for the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC) for more than 9 years. She has also served as an appointed member and ad hoc member of various study sections for the NCRR/NIH and has done site visits as a private or ad hoc consultant.
