Filming at Penn Medicine

To: Penn Medicine Faculty and Staff
From: Susan Phillips

There are many opportunities where photography, videos and other types of filming efforts create a positive view of our collective, and at times, your individual work. News crews and longer format producers and cameras are frequently in our buildings, and both the Public Affairs and General Counsel’s offices are actively involved in assuring that filming proceeds in the safest and most respectful manner possible. The protection of patient safety and individual privacy is always our paramount concern, but the rapidly evolving electronic age requires the consideration of many other facets when images are developed. To avoid last minute problems, I wanted to highlight the general rules for any filming, photography or recording to occur on our premises.

There may be additional requirements depending on particular circumstances, but the above represents the critical elements and each is designed to protect patients, our faculty and staff, and our institution. Should you have a project, the Communications office will assist you with meeting these requirements. I would be happy to answer any questions and appreciate everyone’s support of complying with these important requirements.

Ultra Low Freezer Efficiency Program:
Penn Green Campus Partnership and Facilities and Real Estate Services have officially “kicked-off” the -80 Ultra Low Freezer Efficiency Program. This program’s goal is to reduce both the number of older, under-utilized and/or abandoned freezers and incentivizing the purchase of energy-efficient models. This program is being funded by the Facilities and Real Estate Services Division’s Energy Reduction Fund (ERF).

Bicycle Parking

In an effort to more effectively accommodate the increase of bicycle ridership at the University, bicycle corral parking is being created throughout the campus. Corrals are being placed at key locations toward the perimeter of the campus. Bicycle parking corrals reduce the potential for bicycle/pedestrian conflicts on the walks, improve security by providing video monitoring of corral locations, and enhance building access/circulation by removing the ad hoc placement of racks that has occurred over time. A new corral was recently completed in the yard of Blockley Hall across from Lot #44, and new corrals are being developed on Hamilton Walk and 36th Street. Over the next several weeks University representatives will be removing and relocating free standing bicycle racks in support of the corral plan. Upon the conclusion of this work, bicycle parking near the Perelman School of Medicine will increase from 450 to 658.

After August 26th please park your bicycle at the following nearby locations: south of Blockley Hall on Curie Boulevard, north of Blockley Hall on Guardian Drive, Stemmler Hall on Hamilton Walk, Johnson Pavilion entrance plaza on Hamilton Walk, Hamilton Walk and 38th Street, and/or 36th Street and Spruce Street. Additionally bicycles may be parked south of SCTR along East Service Drive. Parking of bicycles under cover is available in Lot #44; a small access fee applies.

See the University bicycle policy at https://provost.upenn.edu/policies/pennbook/2013/02/14/bicycle-policy. Bicycles are restricted from HUP, PCAM or SCTR and are discouraged from being brought into University facilities. Philadelphia fire code requires clear passage of building exits and exit passageways; bicycles may not be parked in building corridors or stairways. Bicycles shall not be locked, secured or otherwise parked to handrails, fences, trees, trip rails or in any manner that obscures free ingress/egress of any building, stair or pathway. Bicycle riding is prohibited on University Walks weekdays between the hours of 8:30am and 5:30pm.

See a campus plan showing bicycle corral locations and capacities at http://www.facilities.upenn.edu/maps(available 1 September). See also DPS bicycle safety information at http://www.publicsafety.upenn.edu/bicycle-safety-information/.

How to Properly Secure Your Bike

It only takes 10 seconds to remove a cable lock from a bicycle. Learn how Public Safety recommends you secure your bike.

Lab Water Filter Recycling

The Perelman School of Medicine in collaboration with Purchasing, EHRS and Millipore have launched a water filter recycling program for laboratories. The recycling of the filters will now be included in all service contracts. The service technician will collect the filters in large drums to be sent for recycling when full. The complete recycling program details can be found here. We are pleased that this partnership will allow another category of items to be diverted from the landfill.
